Mexican Composer
Gaspar Vargas(1880-1969) is the founder of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitan, Mexico’s most famous Mariachi group. Vargas founded the group in September 1898, at the age of 18. Although Vargas is said to have been illiterate he was taught to play the “guitarra de golpe” by his uncle. When Vargas began Marachi Vargas, they began with four instruments and slowly grew, one of the first additional member being Vargas’ son, Silvestre Vargas in 1913.
Mariachi Vargas began to gain fame in 1931 while performing on both sides of the Mexican/ American border. They later performed for Mexican President Lazaro Cardenas, as he used Mariachi bands in his triumphant presidential campaign. This group founded by Gaspar Vargas more than 100 years ago still thrives and is known today as “El Mejor Mariachi Del Mundo,” or “The Best Mariachi in the World.”
