Joaquin M. Orellana- Marimba

Guatemalan Composer

Joaquin M. Orellana was born on November 5, 1933 to present. Orellana was a Guatemalan composer who studied at the National Conservatory of Music and was a part of the National SO as a violinist for many years.
He is well known for creating specially constructed instuments to capture the "just right" sound he was searching for. He went on to take apart the large, or Grande, Marimba and re peicing it into a new instrument with its own merits. The ciclo-im, rastra-son and pandemarimbas extended and fleshed out the typical marimba sound.

  2. Showcased one of his sound experiments involving flujos sonoro-sociales, soundscapes of Guatemala (1976)
  3. Used magnetic tape, flutes, and  other specialty made instruments, to create a sound or compose a piece by the name “Hibrido a Presion” (1982)
