Jose Castañeda- Classical

Guatemalan Composer:


Born in Guatemala City, Guatemala in 1898 and died in Guatemala City, Guatemala in 1983. Castaneda was a Guatemalan composer, conductor, and theorist who spent most of his studies in Paris. He joined an orchestra group when returning to Guatemala in the early 1930’s. He was the director of the National Conservatory which he taught for many years. He later became an influence on the younger generation at that time. He had a unique way of combining music and choreography, and as a result, gained the attraction of others such as Europe and North America. 

Casteneda was compelled to resign from his post after the dictator of the country, Jorge Ubico was in charge. Ubico militarized civil and social institutions such as the post office and public schools and in addition, the symphony. His policies were represive and violent. In time intellectuals, professionals and artists began to resist his goverenence. Once militarized, Casteneda fled to Europe, returning only after Ubico's death. Castenedas influence was paramount in the lives of younger musicions.
