Juventino Rosas- Mexican Waltz

Mexican Composer:

Juventino Rosas (1868-1894) was a popular salon music composer that was considered the “Mexican Waltz King.”  Rosas had very little musical training and was considered to be self-taught.  Although he lacked professional training, he was said to have an excellent understanding of melody, harmony and rhythm.   This may have come from his childhood desire to do all things related to music that included ringing the church bells and playing the violin.  Rosas began this involvement at the age of seven.  By the age of twelve, Rosas was playing the violin at city functions in Mexico City.

In his adulthood, Rosas led a banda that toured internationally.  His birth city, Santa Cruz de Gaileana, Guanajuato, was renamed after his death to Santa Cruz de Juventio Rosas.  Rosas is best known for “SobrelasOlas,” or “Over the Waves” which was first released in 1884.
