Narciso Martinez (October 29, 1911- June 5, 1992) is known as the “Father of Conjunto Music,” a style of what is known as Norteno, or Ranchero music.  Martinez gained this name not only by his exceptional skills on his accordion, which he began to play at the age of seventeen, in 1928, but also because he was the first successful Conjunto recording artist.  Martinez was also the first accordion artist to accompany singers on “commercial records."

Martinez’ career as a recording artist began in 1936 with Bluebird Records.  Although he is solely known as the “Father of Conjunto Music,” he was known to play alongside bajo sexton player, Santiago Almeida.  Martinez was known to compose and play multiple styles that include but are not limited to, polkas waltzes and danzones.  His most well-known pieces were his polkas.

Although Martinez’ career was not said to have been profitable, he was a recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship Award, given by the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C.,  he was inducted into the Conjunto Hall of Fame, and he also received a Grammy nomination in 1989.  He did all of this before succumbing to Leukemia.
