Jorge Alvaro Sarmientos- Classical

Guatemalan Composer


Born in San Antonio, Guatemala on February 19, 1931 to present; he is a Guatemala composer and conductor. Sarmientos trained at the National Conservatory in Guatemala City with composer Ricardo Castillo. During the years 1955 to 1956 he moved up the ladder to advanced training at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris and at the Instituto Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires. In 1969 and 1972 Sarmientos took conducting classes with Pierre Bolez and Sergiu Celibidache. He began to combine his technical hand to music with his creative hand and started to explore a new style (serial technic, aleatory, and cluster technique). 

From 1972- 1991 he was the musical director for Guatemalan Symphony Orchestra, and has had numerous appearances as a guest conductor in many countries including Latin America, France, the US, Israel, and Japan. He often included his own compositions during these appearances. He taught at the Guatemalan National Conservatory from 1967-1991, Rafael Landivar University from 1968-1980, and Francisco Marroquin University from 1982-1986. His works include: La muerte de un personaje, Hommage, and Ofrenda y gratitude.
